Behind the brand – A week in marketing
Lead by Head of marketing, Callum Dunbar, I spent a week discovering the ins and outs of real-world marketing. I am pleased to be able to share my experiences working with the incredible team at Dancerace.

Who am I?
I am Lowenna Watts, an A-level student from Cornwall studying Media, English Language, and Psychology. Drawing from my experiences completing coursework, attending workshops, and analysing and comparing marketing campaigns, I have become increasingly fascinated by the marketing and advertising sector. So, when presented with the opportunity to spend a week on a work experience programme, I knew it needed to expand my knowledge in this sector.
Why Dancerace?
Having determined the type of work I wanted to delve into; I was keen to find a placement that could give me practical insight into real-life marketing. Knowing that Dancerace was going through new brand development, I had found an interesting chance to discover what brand design looked like for a trusted, award-winning company.
What did I do?
Despite only having a week to immerse myself in the marketing world at Dancerace, Head of Marketing, Callum Dunbar ensured I was fully equipped with everything I wanted to know about both the company and the sector. I met many colleagues and learnt about the jobs involved in running a successful IF business, from finances to product design. I spent time with Callum, talking to freelance copywriters and brand designers, and was allowed to truly develop my understanding of the various journeys into an evolving industry. I attended event planning meetings with Marketing Manager, Georgiana Campbell, which grew my comprehension of company dynamics and the diversity of marketing roles.
Callum also supported me through strengthening my abilities on Adobe software as I applied new branding to social media templates, pushing me to research design fundamentals such as colour and typography, and letting me explore business software such as HubSpot and Qwilr.
My favourite task
The task I enjoyed the most was comparing the previous branding to the new designs. I read a new brand design document, compared PowerPoint templates, and spent time with Callum discussing the new branding process. On this day I also used Adobe Illustrator to create new social media templates, utilising the new brand colours and fonts which I thoroughly appreciated as it fuelled my ever-present passion for design.
How has this experience helped me?
As I am looking at my choices for my future, my time at Dancerace as aided me in broadening my perspective when thinking about marketing. I now know the areas I find the most interesting and where I want to refine my abilities during my next step to university or an apprenticeship.
